THE CHELSEA FISHMONGER
Rex Goldsmith

Rex has been in the fish trade since he was 13 years old. As a boy he used to catch trout in the local stream and sell them to a fishmonger.
He worked on a trout farm for a number of years before becoming a fishmonger for a large supermarket. After a while he became quite disillusioned with the quality of fish and realised he could do better himself. He bought a small fish stall in the corner of the car park at Secrett's Farm Shop, in Milford, Surrey. With his passion and enthusiasm for seafood he built up such a loyal following that he had to have a shop built in the same location.
In December 2004 he opened The Chelsea Fishmonger in Cale Street on the Lovely Chelsea Green. This new venture hit the ground running and the shop has gone from strength to strength. September this year will see the opening of The Chelsea Fishmonger in Guildford at No 6, Kings Post parade, Burpham.
Jamie is the longest serving member of Rex's team with over 8 years of experience. In 1999 he started working as a part time saturday boy in Rex's fish trailer at Secretts Farm Shop becoming full time when the fishmonger shop was first built. Jamie now manages Rex's Fresh Fish, in Milford, and has matured into an essential member of the team. Jamie, an excellent footballer, and a favourite with the ladies, always has a big friendly smile to greet you when you enter his shop.
Duncan served 10 years in the armed forces with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, before leaving to become a personal fitness trainer. It was doing this that gave him a passion for healthy eating and an interest in cooking.
Rex had known Duncan for some years so at this stage decided to try and steal him for his job to work at the newly opened Chelsea Fishmonger.
Duncan prides himself on putting out a beautiful fish display, he is chatty and enjoys talking to customers. He has also recently become a proud father to baby Zack.
Mat has worked for Rex since January 2005. Prior to becoming a fishmonger Mat worked as a fishery consultant, in two spells, (www.fisheriesmanagement.co.uk) spanning a total of 8 years. In between these periods he qualified with BSc Honours in fisheries science from the University of Plymouth. This added to his City and Guilds in fish husbandry and National Diploma in Fish Farming and Fishery Management, both attained at Sparsholt College of Agriculture. Mat has also worked extensively on salmon and trout farms across the UK and has a great understanding of sustainability and fishing techniques. He can also be found at the London Aquarium as a volunteer on Mondays which aids his understanding and knowledge of environmental and ecological issues within the fishing industry. Mat is also a keen walker and last year completed the Trailwalker2006 event in aid of the Gurkha welfare trust.
